Not all oral cancers can be detected by visual and tactile examination. Oral ID is a screening light device that uses fluorescence technology to aid Dr. Masera in visualization of oral abnormalities. The LED light is easy to use and non-threatening to the patient.
Most of the time Oral Cancer is difficult to see until it develops into Stage III and IV cancer. Over 53,000 people in the United States will be newly diagnosed this year, and 71% of oral cancers are found in the late stages. There is only a 35% 5-year survival rate for stage IV oral cancer, and the treatment is usually painful and sometimes disfiguring. This is why it is best to detect oral cancer in its early stages. There are approximately 10,860 deaths in the United States attributed to late stage diagnosis.
HPV is the cause of the fastest growing oral cancer population under the age of 45, and 40% of patients newly diagnosed are young non-smokers. HPV-related cancers are 6-7 times more common in men than in women, but it is important for both men and women to be screened. The CDC recommends everyone 17 years of age and older should be screened.
